Hi Mikey,
Unfortunately, Windows Vista upgrade to Windows 7 for free is non bachelor anymore. I believe that airtight around 2010. If you can get your hand on an erstwhile PC that has Windows 7 on information technology, you tin can apply the license key from that PC to get a "free" legitimate copy of a Windows vii upgrade on your machine.
Just ask around if anyone has a rusted PC that has Win seven on it :)
Cheers
FYI:
You lot practise not understand Windows Licensing Rules to give out that type of information.
If the Laptop/Computer came with the Windows Operating Organization preinstalled (Dell, HP, Acer, etc) or is an OEM System Builders License, that Production Key that came with the Laptop/Figurer is for the preinstalled OEM License and is non-transferable.
The OEM License/Product Key (preinstalled Operating Systems on Dell, HP, etc machines) and OEM System Builders License are tied to the first machine it is installed on and dies when that automobile dies.
Only Retail Operating Arrangement License, that you buy and install yourself, are allowed to be transferred to another machine.
And Retail Licenses can also merely be installed on ane machine at whatever particular time.
Regards.

How-do-you-do Bill,
Thanks for your noesis. Definitely did not know the specifics of the licensing in that location. It was a practice that was done by my colleagues and did non know that that is illegal. The post has been edited to clear that part of the message. I will definitely exercise this from at present on.
Cheers

You lot can run into activation bug if yous don't know what blazon of license you are transferring.
And it only wastes their time doing it.
And with 2d hand large part/organisation computers you may run into the fact that they are using Volume Licensing/Software Assurance activation on many computers, which you can't transfer to your private machine or go on using on the bought 2d hand machine either as information technology requires regular activation.
Thanks.

Just fyi, it's a Dell PC I bought make new from Best Purchase, apparently during the brusque lifespan of Vista. It came with Vista pre-installed and did not come with a disk. It has a recovery partitioning(D:\), but when I run the recovery program, it errors out almost immediately. In all honesty, I didn't know when I bought it that information technology had Vista, or I wouldn't take bought it in the first place, simply I never even knew they offered a free upgrade to Windows 7, or I would have jumped on that opportunity right away. It was beingness used primarily every bit an internet PC, and another family member somehow managed to really jack it up. It still functions as an net PC, but that is about all it is skilful for. It is missing some system files. If I could even repair the installation, I would be content with that, but I can't even do that. Cheers for everyone's assist though. I appreciate it. At this indicate, I'thousand considering installing Linux on information technology. Just kidding. :)

You can reinstall or practice a repair upgrade reinstall using this media.
But with a repair install Vista has to be up and running to exercise it, not similar XP was where yous could boot from the disk and do a repair install
You can borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD (Retail or OEM System Builders License) , that contains the files for the various Vista Editions (Domicile Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) to be installed. The Product Key on your Reckoner / Laptop instance determines which Edition is installed.
The COA sticker is either on the underside of the Laptop or in the Battery Compartment.
With a Desktop it is either on the side, rear or superlative of the Computer Case.
Other Manufacturers' Recovery DVDs are not to exist used for the in a higher place purpose.
And you need to know the "bit" version for Vista, as 32bit and 64bit Editions come on dissimilar DVDs.
Here is how to do a make clean install of Vista, using a Microsoft Vista DVD:
