How To Clean Velvet Coat

Velvet

Woven, tufted fabric with threads cut to form a short, dense pile. Originally made of silk, now also made with cotton, rayon, or synthetic fibers. Its distinctive texture easily attracts lint and dust.

CMSPage Velvet Pretreat Pretreat

Velvet is an opulent, textured fabric for a night out on the town and the winter holidays, but it has increasingly carved out a place for itself in our daytime wardrobes. While many of us have no reservations about integrating this fabric into our wardrobes, when it comes to washing velvet, we're not as confident. So we've created a line of nontoxic products and expert care tips to keep your velvet items looking amazing for years to come.

Can you wash velvet? It's a question we often get asked at The Laundress, along with 'how to wash velvet?' and 'can you put velvet in the dryer?'

The answer is yes and no. Some velvet items are unlaunderable, such as blazers, suits, and upholstery. For these items, we recommend spot treating only.

When washing, always pretreat stains with Stain Solution or the Wash & Stain Bar. Focus on susceptible areas such as underarms, necklines, and cuffs.

Stain Solution is ideal for protein and tannin stains, such as wine, coffee, ink, grass, urine, blood, and old, set-in stains such as pit stains.

The Wash & Stain Bar works the material to remove dirt, grease, oil, and makeup.

To remove odor, presoak the item for 30 minutes in cool water mixed with ¼ cup of Scented Vinegar.

CMSPage Velvet Spot Treat Spot Treat

For unlaunderable items such as blazers, suiting, and upholstery, spot treat only.

To spot treat, wet the Wash & Stain Bar and gently work into the stained area(s).

Remove soap and dirt with a wet Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth—be sure to remove all soap.

Dampen the cloth as needed, and repeat the process until satisfied.

CMSPage Velvet Handwash Handwash

Handwashing is always the best and safest method for washing velvet.

Add 2 capfuls or a squirt of Delicate Wash to a washbasin or sink filled with cool water.

Submerge the item and gently agitate the water with your hands to evenly distribute soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes.

Rinse well by running tepid water through the item until the water is no longer soapy. Do not wring. Instead, press the water out of the item.

CMSPage Velvet Machine Wash Machine Wash

Turn the item inside out, and place it in a Mesh Washing Bag. Select the delicate cycle on the washing machine, and make sure the water temperature is cold and the spin is on low.

Add the appropriate amount of Delicate Wash according to the machine and load size.

Velvet attracts lint, which is difficult to remove once it has attached itself to the dense pile.

Wash the item inside out, and do not wash with materials that produce lint (such as fleece jackets, towels, and sweaters). Wash with like colors and fabrics only.

CMSPage Velvet Dry & Finish Dry & Finish

Lay the item flat, hang to dry, or put in the dryer on the "fluff" setting to prevent a crushed velvet appearance.

Steam after washing to remove wrinkles. Never iron, as ironing will crush or flatten the natural pile.

To freshen items between wears, spritz with Fabric Fresh Classic.

CMSPage Velvet Store Store

A velvet item such as a skirt or dress can be hung on a hanger; however, be mindful of clips because they can leave marks on the material.

Always store items clean.

We recommend storing in a breathable cotton Hanging Storage Bag to protect items from bugs.

Storing in plastic encourages yellowing and can trap mildew-causing moisture, a prime environment for bugs.

All techniques are based on textile science. Not all garments perform and react as science would predict.
